It is with sadness that we farewell Val Kirkwood.
The Illawarra South Coast Association would like to express it’s deepest sympathy to Julie and the family.
Always cheerful & smiling Val was known to be a great hostess and a committed fundraiser for her beloved Illawarra association. No wonder that she was such a valued member of the hockey fraternity bringing to the sport her continuing involvement, enthusiasm & support for junior players.
She began as a player with Figtree Hockey in 1945
In 1949 Val was founding President of Unanderra Club, & in the late 1950’s continued working in administration for the Illawarra WHA in many different roles, being Public Officer & President from 1980 to 1985.
Not to mention voluntarily running the canteen at Lindsey Maynes Hockey Centre for over 20 years.
She was a State “A” Umpire, & as a player represented Illawarra, South Coast Southern Tableland’s, Country, and NSW from 1947 – 1956. She gained her NSW Coaching badge 1965.
Behind Val’s drive to keep improving the facilities was her appreciation of the many people who influenced her enjoyment being involved in the sport she loved, and gave a life time of encouragement to all. She was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000, and HNSW Volunteer of the Year in 2009. Well deserved.
In 2008, Val together with Eileen Bird and Dot May, researched, compiled and published History of Illawarra Women’s Hockey Association 1931-2001.
A Life Member of Unanderra Hockey and IWHA, Val’s smiling face and passion for the game, will be missed by all who knew her around our hockey fields.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Valerie’s funeral service to be held in the chapel, Parsons Funeral Home, 34 Belmore Street Wollongong on Thursday March 23, 2017 at 10am.
